lover era found dead in a ditch
and with that, "she's everything, he's just ken" takes on new meaning
Let me begin this week by waxing poetic about the Barbie movie trailer and how I will be abusing the tagline from the film, “she’s everything, he’s just ken” all summer long. I have not, in a very long time, been so enthralled by a marketing campaign for a movie. Don Draper WISHES he came up with it. July 21st cannot come soon enough.
But let us shift gears. If the rumors are to be believed, Taylor Swift and Joe Alwyn have (amicably, allegedly) broken up after 6 years together. And while I hope they are both doing alright etc, Nick Miller has summed up my feelings most succinctly:
The love behind songs like Sweet Nothing, Peace, Lover, The Great War, Invisible String… is no more? King Of My Heart can officially end after Taylor sings “I’m perfectly fine / I live on my own / I made up my mind / I’m better off being alone.” Lover era found dead in a ditch. Single girl summer starts now.
Reading Lately
I don’t want to talk about it. But also, yes I do. I finally finished reading my advanced copy of Emily Henry’s Happy Place. And I’m not doing well. This book took me over two weeks to read, which for me, is a long time, especially given how much I love Emily Henry. The subject matter is not happy, nor is how I felt while reading it a place (emotionally) I’d like to be again anytime soon. It is well written (of course it is, Emily Henry still wrote it) but it is not a summer feel-good-romance, so if you decide to read it, PLEASE remember that going in. I cried several times over the course of it’s 400 pages, and I just do not have the emotional bandwidth at present for another book like this.
I’m currently listening to the audiobook for Sea of Tranquility by Emily St. John Mandel, which came highly recommended. It is described on goodreads as “a novel of time travel and metaphysics that precisely captures the reality of our current moment.” Not too far in, but enjoying it so far.
Watching Lately
I’ll be sending this newsletter out ahead of this week’s episode of Succession, but I’ll be seated and watching at 6pm PST tonight, don’t you worry.
The Barbie Movie has already become about 27% of my personality just based on how many times I’ve watched the trailer alone
Yellowjackets continues to become more and more unhinged. The show about teen cannibals is finally ABOUT teen cannibals, and while I had over a season to get ready, mentally and emotionally, I simply am not. That said, if you still aren’t watching, please start watching. Let’s be unwell together.
This week on Abbott Elementary, Sheryl Lee Ralph said “some throw dirt on my name, others give flowers. It’s all a garden to me,” and I just loved that.
I continue to show up for Ted Lasso’s final season, but it’s not really doing anything for me if that makes sense.
Excited for next Sunday when HBO will get even more of my Sunday nights with the return of the final season of Bill Hader’s Barry. So if you aren’t caught up there either, consider this your reminder to start binging.
Products Lately
In other exciting news about next weekend, I will be in Palm Desert. Yes, same weekend as Coachella, but I will not being going TO Coachella. I will be attending an assortment of festival adjacent parties, including Revolve Festival (ahh!!) And so with that in mind, apologies in advance for the amount of products links I’ll likely be sharing. To kick things off…
I love this Black Backless Lace Romper from Lulus (currently on sale). I wore it last night to a Taylor Swift Rave (yes, I went again) and you can see it on me in the photo in the section below
Also a big fan of this Black Floral Print Smocked Tie-Strap Crop Top
And of the ASTR dresses I mentioned I fell in love with last week, here is the first one to make it to my IG grid
Eating & Drinking Lately
Saltie Girl (West Hollywood)
New England summer vibes on the Sunset Strip. delicious and definitely worth checking out, but also overpriced (a lobster roll does not need to be $45)
Crossroads Kitchen (West Hollywood)
Vegan food that non vegans will actually love. Also a celeb hotspot. We saw will.i.am during out dinner there Friday night
Grandmaster Recorders (Hollywood)
Grabbed an espresso martini on the rooftop Saturday night (pictured below) and absolutely plan to come back to check out their disco ball room
Alright, hitting send so I can shift into Succession mode. If you read this far, once again, I appreciate you. And as always you can find me on Instagram and TikTok. Come say hi, and thanks for reading, and if you feel so inclined, let your friends know they should subscribe, too!
