August is here! Salt air, and the rust on your door, I never needed anything more…except for all my friends to read the same book as me once a month and come over on a Monday night so we can eat snacks and discuss.
Our inaugural book club meeting in July, pictured below, was a major success. ICYMI, we read Will They Or Won't They by Ava Wilder. The consensus among the group was it was a really fun love story that honestly felt like binging a tv show.
Over a selection of wines, cheeses, and other assorted snacks (most of which were from Trader Joe’s, let’t be honest) we discussed this Hollywood rom-com and settled on our next two months of books. My friends are a bunch of proactive girlies.
The Reading Lately Book Club August pick is Yellowface by R.F. Kuang.
So many different people have told me I have to read it, not to mention it was the July Reese’s Book Club pick. And with 76,000+ reviews and an average Goodreads rating of 4.06, I’m genuinely very excited to dive in.
The Amazon blurb describes Yellowface as such: “White lies. Dark humor. Deadly consequences… Bestselling sensation Juniper Song is not who she says she is, she didn’t write the book she claims she wrote, and she is most certainly not Asian American—in this chilling and hilariously cutting novel.”
One other title we floated around for August was the the fantasy romance novel that’s taken BookTok by storm — Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros. Ultimately, we passed on this book because 1) a few women in the group have already read it and we thought it would be more fun to pick something brand new for everyone and 2) the waitlists at the library are LONG. Add yourself now if you want to get your hands on a copy by the end of the year. You’ve been warned.
And in case you’re curious about my August TBR beyond book club…
I am planning to read (though recognize once again this is not necessarily a realistic goal):
The Last Word by Katy Birchall
The House of Eve by Sadeqa Johnson
Wildfire by Hannah Grace
The Family Game by Catherine Steadman
The Long Game by Elena Armas
Dark Corners by Megan Goldin
Odds are good a bunch of these roll over into September and random books I feel compelled to read jump the TBR. It’s been known to happen.
