well i lost half a day of skiing
succession is back, i got my hands on the new emily henry novel, and other things Gwyneth said during her ongoing ski collision trial
It’s Hurricane Season, baby! The U is headed to the Final Four, and I once again must remind you that it’s great to be a Miami Hurricane! And in other news…
ICYMI, Gwyneth Paltrow has filed a countersuit revolving around a ski accident that occurred in 2016, where it was alleged she “skied out of control” into Terry Sanderson. Sanderson, the man suing Paltrow, claims he can’t enjoy wine tastings due to injuries he endured, among other complaints. Every SINGLE video that pops up on my feed from this whole ordeal has been a gift. Through her own words on the stand, we have learned that Gwyneth would not call herself good friends with Taylor Swift, just friendly, and that my friends, is enough to keep me logging in to twitter dot com for at least another week.
Harry Styles and Emily Ratajkowski were spotted kissing in Tokyo and while, intellectually, I know it is something I should have absolutely no feelings about…I hate it
Sofia Coppola’s daughter created a
masterful short filmhad a viral TikTok that if you haven’t seen, you must watch. The TLDR version is Coppola’s daughter talks about trying to charter a helicopter to visit her camp friend and how her parents don't want her to have public socials so she doesn't turn into a nepotism baby and her babysitter’s boyfriend coins the term fiasca AND we learn nepo-baby-in-chief doesn’t know what an onion looks like. 100% on Rotten Tomatoes from me. Sometimes nepo babies just HAVE IT.
Now keeping on the theme of unrelatable wealthy white people in media…let’s welcome back to our televisions the Roy family.
Watching Lately
Succession is back, baby! Do not ask me to do anything with you from the hours of 6-7pm PST on Sunday nights. HBO has me in a chokehold. I am busy during that window for the next 10 weeks. I am getting this newsletter out ahead of tonight’s episode so no thoughts for now, but trust I will have some next week
The Night Agent, now streaming on Netflix
I had the opportunity to interview the cast of this new political thriller this past Monday. We talked about favorite books, and I got to watch the first episode ahead of last Thursday’s premiere. I’ll probably watch more, but given how many other shows I’m juggling at the minute, it’s not a top priority tbqh
Shrinking on AppleTV+
I finally got caught up in time to watch the finale, and it was a very rewarding episode of television. I continue to enjoy grumpy and charming Harrison Ford
Yellowjackets Season 2 on Showtime OMG
I know A LOT of you have said you don’t watch because you don’t have showtime, but — to be blunt — you need to fix that because this show is exceptionally good. A lot of people have also expressed apprehension about watching since it appears to have a horror-vibe, but as someone who HATES watching horror, I can confirm you can stomach this. You’ll cover your eyes at parts, but it is worth it
I’m also watching Ted Lasso weekly, but nothing major to report after episode two. Oh except that I keep getting videos on my FYP of Jamie Tart fan cams set to Taylor Swift’s This Is Me Trying, and that just feels incredibly specific.
Reading Lately
Another week where I planned to read one book and got completely distracted by the advanced copies of romance books on my kindle…March was supposed to be a thriller month for me, but apparently I am still in my Lover Era
Call it lucky girl syndrome if you want, but by some miracle, I got my hands on an advanced copy of Happy Place by Emily Henry (out on April 25th). Henry has become my favorite contemporary romance author for a litany of reasons, not least of which is all her female protagonists feel like some version of me— overthinking, type A, hard workers with pelotons and skincare routines who long to feel validated and loved in spite of their anxiety and general Taylor Swift Mirrorball vibes (the girls that get it, etc). And all of Emily Henry’s male protagonists are smart and witty and provide that validation in spades. Ugh, I eat it up.
I can deep dive on Happy Place more once I’ve finished it (I’m 1/3 of they way through) but for now, please just know this about it: “a couple who broke up months ago pretend to still be together for their annual weeklong vacation with their best friends.” Again, haven’t finished the book, but I anticipate when it ends, my Emily Henry Book Power Ranking will be 1) Book Lovers, 2) Beach Read, 3) Happy Place 4) People We Meet On Vacation…updates (and tears, I’m sure) to come.
This week I also finished reading Same Time Next Summer by Annabel Monaghan (out June 6), a second chance romance that captures the magic and anguish of first love AND the feeling of being in your late 20s/early 30s and trying to find yourself. Personally, I did prefer Monaghan’s first book, Nora Goes Off Script; without spoiling anything, I had a hard time rooting for Sam and Wyatt — the teenage loves reunited — because, TO ME, there was nothing wrong with Jack, Sam’s fiancé when the book starts.
But that said, I could not put the book down and highly recommend for those looking for a summer romance. Monaghan has quickly become one of my favorite authors. Her and Emily Henry just write nuanced, messy, smart, full humans in love better than most doing it right now. Okay. End of book rant.
Eating & Drinking Lately
Okay so I am not going to talk about Barney’s Beanery in WeHo or their fried pickles AGAIN, but just know that I was there twice in the last week, and I regret nothing. Except maybe the wing sauce stains all over my jeans. Could’ve done without those. Other places I enjoyed…
Bar Hermanito on Sawtelle
Get the Mi Corazon (it tastes like a vacation in a glass) and the Birria Tacos. I’m salivating just thinking about them.
The Bourbon Room in Hollywood — went for live music Saturday night, very cool vibes
Tramp Stamp Granny’s, also in Hollywood
A piano bar owned by Darren Criss and if I’m going out in Hollywood my night is sure to end here scream singing to show tunes. 10/10 no notes
Loving Lately
First up, Well People sent me their new Lip Nurture Hydrating Balm in shade Brave, which I love, and 100% of the proceeds from the sale of this shade go to Lipstick Angels, an organization supporting courageous women fighting cancer, which I love even more
I’ll be living in these Steve Madden sneakers until further notice, also gifted (big thank you SM!)
Saturday morning I took a walk on Melrose and fell madly in love with a yellow dress in the window at ASTR, and then naturally went back this morning to buy it (and three other dresses) because evidently I have no self control
This NEOM candle is a must for anyone looking to upgrade their pre-bed routine. It smells like lavender and heaven. I will be burning it to unwind after the Miami game and Succession, which already has me WOUND UP
^^ The PR boxes that is.
Please forgive any of the above typos (I’m sure there are plenty) as I am rushing to hit send so I can start Succession. If you read this far, once again, I appreciate you. And as always you can find me on Instagram and TikTok. Come say hi, and thanks for reading, and if you feel so inclined, let your friends know they should subscribe, too!
